This is harder than I thought!

Now I know why MOTHER'S DAY is such a HUGE day ... mothers should be celebrated at least 6-1/2 days a week. No one ever told me that the breast feeding was so darn hard. The latch on and the milk coming in was no problem ... the problem is that I can't sleep more than 2 hours at any given time ... and my head is KILLING me! Lack of sleep headache, I remember those from College days, but never remember them being this damn bad. So to all of you breast feeding mommies out there I stand and applause you ... all of you! I am not giving up yet but wow I really want to. I want to more than ever at the 2 am feeding when Daddy gets up and gets her, brings her to me, fills my water and is usually snoring before her mouth is on my boob! That is the worst feeding ever! Oh well I will stick to it, but is any of you have some words of encouragement I would love to hear it all!

PS went to the mall today to shop ... they have this great nursing area ... or so I thought ... the damn nursing room is half the size of my bathroom, they had teenboop music blaring, no air register and 2 spot lights that made it about 80 degrees in there ... by the end of the 30 min feeding session we were all sweating and I was pissed ... next time we will head home to feed!

I'm a friend of Katie's and I thought I would stop by...breastfeeding is by far the hardest thing I've ever done! Its not for everyone but besides knowing it was good for my baby, it took off most all of my pregnancy weight, and it was a lot cheaper than formula...hang in there...it gets much better once they start sleeping through the night.

I agree with you but you have to hang in there!!Keep going. Soon enough the feedings will not be as frequent. Do not give up. Have you tried to do it while you are on your side in the bed? I am not sure how you feel with your baby in the bed with you, but it might be worth a shot. GOOD LUCK and let us know how you are doing!!

breast feeding sucks. i lasted one day. so, i feel ya. in my opinion, formula is good stuff, so don't feel guilted into feeling you have to breast feed. do whatever you feel most comfortable with. good luck to ya, girl! :)

I don't know that I have any advice to give, I did it so long ago. My kids are 18 and 15 now. I breastfed both of them, but only for 6 weeks each. You have to do what's right for you and don't let anyone else decide what that is for you. If you switch to formula, don't feel guilty about it. There's nothing wrong with formula. Each has it's good and bad points, it's deciding whats right for YOU. Good luck.
Hugs,
Stacie

KIm~ I am very proud of you regardless of whether you sick to breastfeeding or not! It is very hard but well worth it, the sleep does get better I promise!!! I thought I would never get more than 2-4 hours sleep until Preston was about 6 months old :) He is almost a year, he sleeps 11-12 hours straight and I am still breastfeeding! I love you! Courtney

I don't have any advice on the breast feeding subject. I had a reduction years ago and they cut into my mammory ducts. I was told that I could not breast feed. I did have a milk explosion though so I wonder if I could have done it? Anyway, formula is fine. I would reccommend going for as long as you can and then switch if you want. They say it's those first weeks that are so important anyway. It's such a controversial subject. It comes down to what's best for YOU and your baby. Only YOU can decide that. Anyone that gives you grief about your decision does not have your best interest at heart! It's not like formula is pizza & Beer ya know! LOL!
Hang in there! That mall experience sounds like the pits!

I also got here via Katie. First of all CONGRATUALTIONS! What a cutie!

I have to agree with the other ladies - do what's best for you. (For me it was DVDs in the middle of the night to keep me awake while she was eating)

If it works with your plan, I highly recommend pumping (or formula supplements) when you're out. When she's over 3 weeks it shouldn't keep her from nursing at other, more convenient times.

I tried to breast feed but couldn't. I gave up as soon as they handed me a hungry child and I had no milk for him. I really wanted to do it too. Hang in there, the benefits way outway the negatives!

I breastfed my kiddies til they were 6 months and 4months. My advice don't wake the baby to feed her even though they tell you she needs to eat often. If she's fussing try letting her get herself adjusted to where she will just fall back asleep. If you wake up and you're up and she's asleep pump off the milk that way the hubs can possibly feed her once through the night during the week so you can get a good nights sleep or you can always give it to Tatum at a later time. I think you can freeze breast milk for up to a week. If she's falling back asleep rather quickly-she's not hungry. I woke my son every 2 hours to breast feed because they told me that's what I needed to do to make him healthy and for him to thrive. Liars!!!! When I did that for the first 6 months of his life-the kid didn't sleep through the night til he was 5 years old. 5 Kim. 5!

I never liked nursing in public when I had the kids. But times have changed and it's socially acceptable to breast feed in public-where as 15 years ago it wasn't. I wouldn't sit in a room that small that was that hot. No thank you!

I'm with the others...no one tells you how hard it is. I e-mailed every girlfriend of mine who had kids at 4 am after a particularly hard night of breastfeeding early on...apparently lots of people have issues which made me feel better.

I'm a strong believer in breastfeeding and its benefits and did it with my two girls. However I swore if I had Baby #3 I would bottle feed...expensive? Yes...but for me personally...totally worth it.

Adding on to what kimmyk said...I agree with her-for the most part. I let my son sleep as long as he could at night, but daytime is a different story. I would wake him up for feedings during the day-if I didn't I knew he would get his days and nights mixed up. I tried my darndest to make sure he stayed awake during feedings so as to get a full feeding each time (this prevented snack feeding and using me as a pacificer). This follows what I learned from the "babywise" series-I highly reccomend them. It works! He started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks.

I'm currently breastfeeding my 6 month old baby girl, and it was REALLY difficult the first few weeks, and even into the 6th week, since she had a Preferred side, which was RAW from all her attention. I got some Lanolin cream from Target in the baby section, and it helped TONS for soreness and I didn't have to clean it, since it absorbed. I too followed the Babywise series, and both my girls (7 yrs and 6 mpnths) slept through the night by 8-9 weeks, so it's my best advice. I need sleep, or I'm a major bitch to my poor husband. Anyways good luck on your beautiful baby.
